Talk about your pie in the sky! Architecture firm David Fisher's Dynamic Group has released plans to build the world's first rotating skyscraper (Where else, but in Dubai – of course, the home of over-the-top taste). Each floor will have the ability to rotate independently (slowly, we hope), creating an ever-shifting visual line and myriad shapes. While the skyscraper breaks all previous molds, the web site for the architecture firm (link) falls way behind the times with several broken images, lackluster layouts, misspelled page titles, and poor transitional effects. At a minimum cost of $4M per apartment, you'd think they could do just a little better job designing a dynamic web site! Hmmm... I think we smell a sales opportunity!... More

A superb design for a master-planned community just within Orlando, Florida that features a modern neighborhood with a "ridiculous amount of parks". This line-driven web design features a great blend of photography, solid typography, and vintage illustrations that create the framework for exploring this rich interactive environment, while the smart writing and marketing copy which comprises the meat of the site is quite fun to read. The juxtaposition of the various styles is beautiful and creates a welcoming, yet contemporary feel for this site. A really gorgeous job here.... More
Forget for a moment – websites, posters, fashion, electronics, and furniture... here is an outstanding design firm that specilizes in shipbuilding... yachts to be exact! And what yachts they are – we just can't get enough of the design of these unique vessels. Some of them look like PT-boats, updated with a modern twist. The larger yachts have this sophiticated, military line to them, almost like mini naval cruisers. But that's just the exteriors... Tansu takes their vast experience in product and interior design, and pours it into an thoroughly obsessive attention to detail, styling and architecture that raises the entire boating experience to a higher plane of expression and usability—inside and out. Living at the crossroads of so many design disciplines, while crafting such beautiful, usable crafts is really just unfair. Damn right, we're straight-up jealous! This set of four historic buildings in San Francisco has been meticulously designed and developed into 95 luxury residential, live/work and commercial spaces... and to reflect that, the site has a clean, minimal and luxurious "air" to match. The ultimate collection of awarded designs, the AIGA Archives are the recorded catalog of annual juried selections in design excellence. Featuring 3,269 hand-picked entries (at this posting) from the '365' annuals dating back to 1994 (issue no. 15), the entire site is a graphic designer's goldmine. The best part is the Flash-built interactive navigation which allows you to browse and cross-reference entries by publication date and category—to reduce 3,269 down to 24 specific entries in a matter of three-four clicks... and even lets your lightbox your favorites. If you're not familiar with his work, FAILE is one of the modern day gods of the half-tone dot, stencil art, and gritty pop-culture graphics—and we were ecstatic to discover this website covering his unique multimedia designs. Done up like a sort of yellow pages ads on LSD, FAILE's many projects pick up where Andy Warhol left off... Prints, stencils, screenprints, and videos that resemble a street art-inspired cross between CONCRETE TV (MNN) and the Cartoon Network run through a photo copier. There's just too many gems in his site to list here, but let's say: clicking around will be heavily rewarded. For us, beyond a doubt, one of the best sites and artists of the year.... More

The Highline is a 1.5-mile historic, defunct, elevated rail structure on Manhatttan's West Side. This robust website was created to showcase the design concepts for the public park conceived by Field Operations and Diller Scofidio + Renfro, in conjunction with a show at the MoMA. Mimicking the floating above the street feel, the site flows horizontally, unfolding like a long, scrolling path, capturing the meandering, exploratory experience of the place. Much like the finished Highline, this site is worth exploring slowly, viewing all of its parts to enjoy the full experience.... More

A very dark and distressed promotional site for a musical theater company in Poland. This site shows how it really takes a number of elements coming together in harmony to make a great online presentation. We were very impressed with the full screen "slicing" Flash transitions, minimal use of colors, grainy diffused photos and solid type treatments. Even if you don't understand Polish, you can have a good experience just from flipping through these large page designs using a very easy to understand navigation. Dark and dramatic!... More

This captivating design for a green website on sustainable construction is crafted with movement and unique transitions to diametrically oppose grey, static architecture websites. We absolutely love the way each page zooms out to show the entire page layout, then transitions you smoothly back to reading distance. What's great about this site is all you have to do is punch in the web address, load it up and let it play. On the other hand, if you want you can drill down to each project and zoom into every image in the portfolio. The architectural work contains some huge cultural and civic projects (like Radio City Hall, for one), as well as some small, but very great residential renovations. Smart Flash scripting gives users an in-depth view of every image... it really feels like you are sitting at a big table sifting through high-resolution photographs with a big magnifying glass. Ultimately the little details (and there are many) in the design of this portfolio really make it shine. Truly wonderful.... More
Like a good old-fashioned 'block' party (but minus the grill), this web site uses lots of squares of information in a colorful design, while using Flash to elegantly warp and transform the grid on each different page. With a limited amount of content, the site does a good job at balancing the building’s rich past (built in 1880) and the neighborhood’s soulful character with the sleek and modern residences inside. The design team used subdued, matte colors to showcase both the sunlit interior shots and the charming photos of Firehouse 735 as it once was in past times to appeal to an up-and-coming neighborhood in Brooklyn, Prospect Heights. Every once in a while, we come across a site or portfolio that truly breaks new ground in interaction and interface design... Of course, you don't need to read any farther to know what you can only experience by visiting the site. But let's just fill in the blanks; This is an art and industrial design portfolio website for the works of a creative duo from Hungary. Spavia (both sections) contains artworks and projects in ceramics and porcelain, silicate design products, paintings, photograms and photography. Kudos go out to these two who have obviously contemplated the medium (Flash) and made their portfolio very easy to use and understand, while also developing a highly original creation. (Added HINT: Use intuitive keyboard buttons to "walk" through instead of clicking.)... More

The work inside has a breath of personality, and coveys a particular understanding of the visual world. Is an exhibition 'module' promoting a larger exhibition at the Royal College of Art (from May 1-21, 1998). This wonder is called 'the Campaign Against Living Miserably' and is about artists creating their own personal utopias. The design mixes naively large flat areas of colour with newspaper like halftone images to suggest campaigning and protest. The idea was to create a self-contained site to promote the exhibition which could also be read as an obsessive manifesto (and hopefully artwork) in itself. A font foundry that combines industrial print designs and web techniques into a platform that artfully displays their fonts. This site uses art instead of words to define what web design is all about. The site, although little changed since 1997, is still an excellent showcase of graphically rich print design merged with technical functionality. Some may find a few of the interface items a bit difficult to manipulate, but for the most part the site is equally rich in content and delivery, which is why the site may not be suitable for all browsers - their fonts are not suitable for all designers! Unfortunately, Swoon is no longer designed by a particular magazine and web designer we knew, but the site still maintains enough design integrity and flavors for ample inspiration. Nice colors and iconography remain, while some of the line-enforced design and interface breakdown is still hidden in the underlying structure. Qaswa was an early showcase of 3-dimensionality online. Great use of shading created one of the first sites with an illusion of depth. The navigation used the default vertical nature of the browser to its advantage, while the iconography complimented the smooth nature of the shading. The design sometimes overshadows the content which is bizarre, humourous and often twisted. No longer online since this posting. Designed by the Santa Monica Design Team - part of the BigGun Project. Maintained by a designer in France, this site showcases the visual richnesss of Japanese design - illustrations, graphic design, photography, movie posters, and even some interesting eccentricities. Super probably qualifies as our first international gallery piece - originating in France - and it was one of the first personal sites that showcased a designers' ideas, works and interests in a well designed public presentation. This style of site is still the choice presentation for independent graphic designers to self-promote their print and web work. Usually, the designers use this style of site to hone existing skills, engage new projects and work, or to publicize some interest of personal importance.
